MIC

Child Advocacy Case Management Platform

Final Figma Prototype (Report Writing Flow)
Final Figma Prototype (Flag Flow)

Project Overview

MIC is a cloud-based platform that supports Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) in managing clerical tasks for children involved in CHINS (Child in Need of Services) cases. Our team redesigned MIC to streamline report writing, case management, and communication, allowing volunteers to focus more on child advocacy.

My Role

I led the high-fidelity UI/UX design efforts, focusing on interaction design, usability, and accessibility. I collaborated within an agile team, facilitated sponsor meetings, and iteratively refined the platform through user research, wireframing, prototyping, and usability testing.

The Challenge

The existing MIC platform presented navigation inefficiencies, unclear workflows, and accessibility barriers that made administrative tasks overwhelming for CASA volunteers. Our challenge was to create a more intuitive, interactive, and user-friendly experience that minimized clerical burden.

Process & Key Takeaways

Research & Discovery

  • Audited previous prototypes to identify usability gaps and opportunities.

  • Conducted usability testing with CASA volunteers to gather insights on workflow pain points.

  • Analyzed competitive platforms (Slack, Dropbox, Notion) to inform admin and permission-based user flows.

Ideation & Wireframing

  • Facilitated individual sketching and group whiteboarding sessions to reimagine core workflows.

  • Mapped streamlined user journeys and site architecture for both volunteers and administrators.

  • Built mid-fidelity wireframes in Figma focusing on improved navigation, task efficiency, and content clarity.

Prototyping & Testing

  • Designed a high-fidelity interactive prototype, enhancing features like report writing, document management (Autofill), and AI Assistant.

  • Conducted cognitive walkthroughs and iterative usability tests to validate user flows and interface improvements.

  • Applied feedback to refine accessibility, navigation, visual hierarchy, and mobile responsiveness.

Final Outcome

The final interactive prototype featured:

My Role

  • Led UX/UI design efforts from wireframe to high-fidelity mockups for a task-focused volunteer platform.

  • Applied user-centered design methods and accessibility standards to support diverse user needs.

  • Collaborated in an agile team to refine user flows, improve layout structure, and ensure developer alignment.

Reflection & Learnings

1

Design for Complex Systems

Balancing user needs with administrative workflows taught me how to simplify complexity without losing functionality.

2

User-Driven Innovation

Feedback from CASA volunteers shaped the platform’s evolution, reinforcing the power of iterative, user-centered design.

3

Social Impact Focus

Building a platform that empowers child advocates deepened my commitment to designing with empathy and real-world impact.

Before

  • The platform’s original interface lacked intuitive workflows for CASA volunteers, leading to confusion and inefficiency.

  • Task management features were buried or inconsistently laid out, reducing productivity.

  • UI components lacked consistency and accessibility, making the experience non-inclusive.

  • Developers had difficulty translating existing designs into functional screens due to low design fidelity.

After

  • Delivered developer-ready, high-fidelity UI mockups in Figma that streamlined volunteer workflows.

  • Introduced a clearer information hierarchy and simplified interaction flows for key tasks.

  • Applied accessibility best practices (e.g., color contrast, keyboard navigation) to improve usability for all users.

  • Improved communication between design and development teams through consistent, annotated design assets.
